Gynecology Q & A

When should you see a gynecologist?

Yearly gynecological exams help monitor the health of your pelvic organs, including your reproductive organs and bladder. You can start seeing a gynecologist at ages 13-15, but the appointment may include just a talk and physical exam, with no pelvic exam.

If you’re sexually active, it’s particularly important to see a gynecologist to check for sexually transmitted infections.

What is involved in a gynecology visit?

Your doctor from The Women’s Center begins the appointment with a review of your general health and discusses any changes. They examine the outside of your vagina and use a speculum to examine the inside of your vagina and cervix. You usually have a Pap test performed during this portion of the exam. Your doctor gathers cells from your cervix using a swab — it’s generally not painful but a little uncomfortable. A Pap test screens for cervical cancer.

Your doctor also checks your uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries for irregularities by placing two gloved fingers in your vagina. You also undergo a breast exam for any lumps or irregularities.

Do gynecology visits include screenings for sexually transmitted disease?

If you’re sexually active, you should mention this to your doctor at The Women’s Center and request testing for sexually transmitted diseases. These tests are not a standard part of your exam, but are important — often you don’t have symptoms but are contagious. Sexually transmitted diseases include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HPV (human papillomavirus.)

When else should I consult a gynecologist?

In addition to annual screenings, you should consult the team at The Women’s Center whenever you have concerns about your cycle, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, vaginal pain, or pain during intercourse. Common conditions evaluated and treated by gynecologists include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and cysts

Your doctor at The Women’s Center can also discuss family planning with you, inform you about your birth control options, and provide insertion or prescriptions.
